Manatee Downlisting is Premature!

On February 20, 2016IMG_1309, the USFWS held a public meeting regarding their proposal to change the status of manatees from endangered to threatened.

I attended the meeting and spoke out for our beautiful manatees to keep the endangered status and the strongest possible protections. The threats to their health and safety are only going to continue to increase in coming years, not decrease!!

Mr. Craig Pittman wrote about the hearing in the Tampa Bay Times.

Here is the video of me speaking at the meeting in Orlando on February 20, 2016:

The USFWS is taking written comments on the potential downgrade until April 7, 2016. This is a very important issue and I think you should tell the USFWS to keep the manatee endangered.  This is how you can contact them:

In the Keyword box, enter docket number FWS-R4-ES-2015-0178. Then in the search panel on the left under the Document Type heading, click on the Proposed Rules link to locate this document, and enter your comments.

Congratulations on your wonderful blog, Megan. It looks perfect! I love the embedded link from the Tampa Bay Times, the video of your comments, and the easy to follow instructions for sending in public comments to safeguard our manatees. The photos make your blog come alive and I very much appreciate being able to leave a comment. It’s quite a splendid page. I look forward to reading more from you. Keep up the excellent work and thank you for protecting our wild lands and wildlife; it makes a big difference.

We are so proud of you! Your late grandfather Carl Sorbo would be overjoyed to see you so passionate about this issue. He was an avid environmentalist also.
    Aloha, Grandma and Grandpa Block

  4. Averill Summer says:

Thank you, Megan, for the work you are doing to draw attention to preserving Florida’s natural species. In the newest National Geographic magazine there is a one-page interview with Nobel Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai, age 18, in which she encourages kids your age to fight for causes like this because people will listen to you. You might enjoy reading it. Keep up the good work!!

  5. Summer Moore says:

Megan, You are my heroine. Thank you for your deliberation and inspiration, and for all that you do for the wildlife of Florida… and for we who live in it.
